European Green Deal - Driving Agricultural Green Transformation and Sustainability

In 2019, the European Union introduced the European Green Deal, marking a significant step in its efforts to promote environmental sustainability across various sectors, including agriculture. Under this policy, the EU has adopted the Farm to Fork Strategy, which aims to reduce the use and risks associated with chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and antibiotics in agricultural practices.

The strategy is underpinned by two key targets:

i. By 2030, the EU plans to cut the use and risks of chemical pesticides by 50%, replacing them with alternatives such as biological pesticides and integrated pest management (IPM) approaches.

ii.The EU also aims to reduce the use of highly hazardous pesticides by 50% by 2030. This goal aligns with the EU's recent actions to ban certain harmful pesticides and restrict their use.

China’s Contribution to Global Sustainable Farming Achieves Remarkable Results

Since 2015, China has been actively working toward improving the sustainability of its agricultural sector. The Ministry of Agriculture in China initiated The Zero Growth Action for Fertilizer Use, which aimed to curb the growth of fertilizer consumption by 2020. This initiative has yielded notable results, with the total amount of fertilizers used in China decreasing by 13.8% in 2021 compared to 2015, reaching 51.91 million tons.

In addition, the Chinese government has launched The Action Plan for Fertilizer Reduction by 2025, which sets ambitious targets, including increasing the area of land treated with organic fertilizers by more than 5 percentage points and achieving a 43% fertilizer utilization rate for the three major staple crops (rice, wheat, and corn) by 2025.

Further demonstrating its commitment to sustainable agricultural practices, China has also issued The Action for Pesticide Reduction by 2025. One of the key targets under this plan is to reduce the intensity of pesticide use in major crops such as rice, wheat, and corn by 5% compared to the "13th Five-Year Plan" period (2016-2020). For economic crops like fruits, vegetables, and tea, the target is a 10% reduction in pesticide usage.
